You need clear English pronunciation & good listening skills for IELTS success.
It’s important to remember that you will not be marked on your “accent”. At this point – it’s important that you start to think about the difference between “accent” and “pronunciation”. These are very different. For example, if you speak with a foreign accent, a British English accent or an American accent – that is not what matters in your IELTS Speaking test. If English is not your first language you will have a “foreign accent”. That is fine and it is not what matters in an IELTS exam. What matters is how CLEAR your accent is.
Clarity is what matters and this can mean the difference between a great IELTS Speaking score and a bad IELTS Speaking Score.
Difficulties with pronunciation can also affect grammar, for example many students do not pronounce past tense ‘ed’ endings correctly. This makes them difficult to understand and can affect their grammar score too! Students often also leave off plural ‘s’ at the ends of words and this affects their grammar too. These are important to get right for a good IELTS speaking score.
So – start to think about how CLEAR you. Do people understand you easily? Or – do they sometimes ask you to repeat, or can you tell that they have not understood some of your words.
Listening is the first step! Think about what areas you should improve:
- do you make English vowel sounds and consonant sounds correctly? As a non-native speaker it is likely that you find some of them difficult in some words.
- do you speak too fast or too slow? If you speak too slowly you need more practice. Speak as much English as you can between now and your test. If you speak too fast, start to slow down. Slowing down your speech can make a BIG difference to how easily people understand you. It’s an easy way to instantly improve your clarity. Start now!
- do you know about syllable stress in English – word stress and sentence stress. This is the way we emphasise certain syllables – it’s what makes the rhythm of English and it is very, very, very important for clear English.
